London Bridge history-Con't
1096-1209 AD-trials suffered
The bridge was struck by a tornado type storm in 1096 and this was followed by floods destroying the wooden bridge. The replacement was unfortunately demolished by a ferocious fire in 1130. By 1209 a mainly stone bridge was designed by Peter of Colechurch and construction was started a few yards west of the very last wooden one.
The new bridge was eventually finished by King Henry II. It had 19 narrow archways which caused a great deal of turbulence making it dangerous for boats to pass through them, therefore you had to disembark at Southwark by the bridge and catch another boat/ship on the other side. London Bridge was still the only bridge on the whole of the Thames.
